Celebrating a 170-year legacy

Official opening of our 170th Good Works Exhibition celebrating our legacy of work within the community.

Wednesday 22 May 2024 marked the official opening of our 170th Good Works Exhibition, a milestone event that commemorates the Society’s remarkable journey from its inception in 1854 to the present day.

The exhibition held at Xavier College in Kew – which holds a special historical significance for us, as it was where our first St Vincent de Paul Society school conference was formed back in 1908 – provided a comprehensive look at our enduring commitment to assisting Victorians in need, featuring an interactive timeline and portraits that honour the 'good works' of our members and volunteers.

We were honoured to have Dr Monique Ryan, Member of Parliament for Kooyong, and her husband Peter Jordan, join us, alongside our Group CEO Dr Jennifer Fitzgerald and State President Michael Quinn.

Dr Ryan and Mr Jordan's genuine interest and interaction were clearly appreciated by everyone present.

With 70+ attendees, including members and volunteers from various conferences, the event was a time to reconnect, reminisce and celebrate the enduring spirit that binds us together. Their words of support and admiration were deeply encouraging, reaffirming the impact of our collective efforts.

The light evening tea provided the perfect setting for heartfelt conversations and reflections on our shared achievements.

One of the highlights of the exhibition was the innovative use of augmented reality. Visitors engaged with the interactive timeline, which offers snippets of our journey from the 1850s to today. Comments included: this brought "our history to life," allowing attendees to witness pivotal moments and achievements in an immersive way.

Additionally, attendees could watch and celebrate the individual journeys of our members, volunteers and the people we have assisted through the portraits displayed in the exhibition.

The 170th Good Works exhibition is not just a celebration of our past, it is a testament to our ongoing commitment to helping communities in need and a promise of continued service in the years to come.
