“People still need support”

2020 has been a year we will never forget – unfortunately for all the wrong reasons.

Since March, the coronavirus has upended all our lives with catastrophic economic impacts resulting in wide-spread job losses, rising unemployment and underemployment figures, along with long-term uncertainty for people around the globe.

With the future of social support payments like JobKeeper up in the air, and the government yet to commit to a permanent increase for the JobSeeker safety net, we are continuing to be there for individuals and families bearing the brunt of this traumatic moment in history.

For Penny from our Vinnies Community Hub in Penrith, the impact of COVID-19 has significantly affected the local community.

“We normally get a high number of new clients each month; right now we’ve seen an even higher number with all the reasons pointing to COVID,” explains Penny.

“I am most worried for the people out there who are at high risk, and those who have no support systems, family or friends.

“There are also a lot of people who have never needed or received assistance before, and so they’re unsure how to get help.”

With the government currently delivering the second Economic Support Payment of $750 for pensioners, veterans, disability support recipients and carers, those who have been left out will need the support of charities to get by according to Penny.

“In ‘normal times’ it’s difficult enough to manage, but add COVID to the mix and it makes day-to-day life even harder.

“People still need support around housing, access to counselling services, information on how to keep safe, medical treatments, and basics like furniture and clothes.”

While recent times have tested Penny and her team in Penrith, she remains committed to being there for her community in a time of need.

“We are still coming to work each day – there is a sense of trepidation in venturing out, but we want to be here as people still need assistance.

“There’s a lot of unknowns but we’re taking it day by day.”
