Communities are better together with volunteers

National Volunteer Week takes place from 16-22 May 2022

The St Vincent de Paul Society NSW can make a difference to the lives of thousands of people experiencing disadvantage every year thanks to the support of its network of members and volunteers.

While we are collectively grateful every day, the Society extends its heartfelt appreciation and thanks during National Volunteer Week to everyone who has given their time in pursuit of helping us to shape a more just and compassionate society.

At present, more than 10,000 people give their time to the St Vincent de Paul Society NSW, including:

• 3,355 members located throughout the state
• 5,215 volunteers supporting the Society’s network of 227 Vinnies Shops

Paul Burton, St Vincent de Paul Society NSW State Council President, expressed gratitude to the many members and volunteers who contribute to their communities through the Society every day.

“The theme of this year’s National Volunteer Week – Better Together – reflects the connection that comes from giving of yourself in the name of achieving something that benefits everyone.

“Volunteering sees people from all walks of life coming together as a community to create a better society for all to enjoy.

“We are so grateful to each one of our members and volunteers who give of themselves to enable the work we do in communities throughout the state.

“And we are grateful, too, to our former volunteers who have been unable to return, particularly as a result of COVID, these last few years.

“We completely understand why volunteering has become difficult in the face of current events,” Mr Burton said.

“It should also be noted that the members and volunteers who give up their time for the Society are just a part of the broader volunteering movement in Australia.

“I have recently been reminded of how we work with other groups and individuals in disasters or just in everyday life to help make life a little bit better for those less fortunate.

“Volunteers across Australia are just absolutely spectacular,” Mr Burton said.

“There are a variety of reasons why people choose to take part in the good works of the Society.

“Many of our members see the work they do as a way of living out their faith, while for others it comes from principles of social justice.

“Whatever drives it, that call to support people in times of need is a strong one among people who give up their time for their communities,” Mr Burton said.

Our Vinnies Shops are supported by amazing volunteers, who do incredible work to raise vital funds that facilitate our services and programs.

“And it’s important to recognise that everyone involved in the Society has a direct hand in helping alleviate poverty and other forms of disadvantage.

“The past year has been quite challenging with the ongoing effects of COVID and flooding in the north-east yet, through it all, our members and volunteers have found innovative ways to lend a hand to assist people in need.

“The St Vincent de Paul Society is powered by the dedication of our members and volunteers – we are so thankful for all that they do,” Mr Burton said.
