The St Vincent de Paul Society NSW welcomes the announcement by the NSW and Federal Governments to invest in energy efficiency upgrades for social housing properties across the state.

The NSW Government has matched funding provided by the Federal Government by committing $206 million with a combined commitment of $175 million for energy upgrades in social housing including heat pump hot water systems, ceiling fans, reverse-cycle air conditioners, and solar systems.

Low income households and apartments will also be able to access renewables through solar banks and gardens through a further $30 million in Federal funding.

“St Vincent de Paul Society NSW welcome the positive steps taken today by the NSW Government to improve the liveability of social housing throughout the state along with helping to reduce tenants’ energy bills through greater energy efficiency,” said Yolanda Saiz, St Vincent de Paul Society NSW CEO.

“As the population faces more intense and frequent weather events, it is incumbent upon all governments to adopt measures that ensures housing is suitable and resilient to the current climate,” said Ms Saiz.

“Energy bills are a common source of hardship for the people our members assist, so measures that will provide relief are greatly appreciated,” said Paul Burton, St Vincent de Paul Society NSW State President.

”We look forward to working with the NSW Government on other measures to support households being severely impacted by the cost of living and changing climate,” said Mr Burton.

The Society made a number of recommendations in its last Pre Budget Submission and look forward to working with the NSW Government in the lead up to the 2024/25 NSW State Budget to be delivered later this year.
