New State President Elected in SA

Media Release
10/10/2024

The St Vincent de Paul Society South Australia (the Society) is pleased to announce the election of its new State President, with Geraldine Hawkes assuming the role on 8 October 2024 following the conclusion of Brad Hocking’s term and the official handing over of the presidency.

Geraldine’s formal involvement with the Society in South Australia began in 2020 when she became a member of the Salisbury Conference. Her connection to the Society, however, has deep roots as her father was an active member of the St Vincent de Paul Society in Glasgow, where Geraldine was born.

Geraldine established strong relationships with the Society during her employment with the Archdiocese of Adelaide, leading spiritual formation and leadership sessions for various groups. Her extensive experience across a broad range of church and community organisations has further prepared her for the State President role.

In 2020, Geraldine was elected Regional President for Central District, and in 2023, she was appointed as a Vice President on the State Council, with responsibilities including oversight of Conferences and providing direction for the Society’s governance. Among her many contributions, she was instrumental in the creation of the Social Needs Analysis and Advocacy Committee and was a key figure behind the development of the Society’s Conference Principles, designed to unify the organisation’s work and elevate the dignity of all who seek assistance.

Geraldine's vision for the Society is one that embraces a ‘spirituality of encounter,’ ensuring that everyone who engages with the St Vincent de Paul Society is positively impacted.

‘I will be working with others to increase the Society’s presence and practical support alongside people burdened by social, economic or spiritual poverty through new models of companionship in local neighbourhoods. We will also ensure greater advocacy for a more equitable sharing of life’s resources, especially for children.’

Brad Hocking expressed his enthusiasm for Geraldine’s appointment, stating, ‘Geraldine has been a coach and an inspirational force throughout my presidency, particularly in guiding how we engage with the people we assist. I am excited to see how she will lead the Society forward in its Mission, and she has my full support. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Society members, volunteers and staff for their support during my term.’
