Winter is usually the perfect time for many rounds of hot chocolates, having warm homemade food, and stay cosy inside your home with your family.
Unfortunately, this year for many this seems far from reality for many vulnerable individuals and families in our region.
Homelessness can happen to anyone, it does not have a specific category. In the area that the St Vincent de Paul Canberra/Goulburn operates, which ranges from Canberra to Tumut from the South Coast and beyond Young; issues like domestic violence, natural disasters, and lack of affordable, or low-cost housing and accommodation have increased the number of people seeking our help.
Adrian Cobb, Family Services Coordinator at St Vincent de Paul Society Canberra/Goulburn, said, "This year at Vinnies Family Services, we have seen a rise of people seeking help. Currently, the most pressing issue is homelessness due to families escaping domestic violence combined with a lack of affordable, supported, or low-cost housing and accommodation."
Domestic violence is the leading cause of homelessness for women and children in the Canberra region and nationally. Tragically, the number of women experiencing domestic violence has increased significantly in the past two years.
“At Vinnies Canberra/Goulburn we provide assistance such as clothing, blankets, food, connection to specialised services and the financial support needed to help women fleeing domestic violence to start again. We can provide financial help, guidance, and caseworkers to provide personalised support to help find pathways.
Our dedicated team of volunteers and members are here to help with respect and compassion those who come to us every day, but we need the communities help in providing funds to enable us to do this, especially this year” said John Feint, President of the St Vincent de Paul Society Canberra/Goulburn.
Every night of safety and provision of support makes a practical difference so we’re asking the community to help us make it possible by donating to the 2022 Vinnies Winter appeal by calling on 13 18 12 or via www.donate.vinnies.org.au/winter-appeal
