Vinnies CEO Sleepout is back in 2023

Business and community leaders will sacrifice a night of comfort to make a difference.

St Vincent de Paul Society Canberra/Goulburn launched the 2023 Vinnies CEO Sleepout today, Thursday, 13 April, at the National Museum of Australia, with business and community leaders participating in attendance.

Lucy Hohnen, CEO of Vinnies Canberra/Goulburn, said, “The most recent census data revealed that incidence of all forms of homelessness has remained stubbornly high in our region and increased a significant portion being women.”

This year, Vinnies aims to raise $800,000 to support the delivery of its specialist homelessness services to provide life-changing practical support and emergency assistance with rent, food, medical and fuel bills to many Canberrans on low-income facing the brunt of cost-of-living crisis.

“Each day, someone needs to live in a car, a tent, or someone’s couch due to something that’s happened in their lives, often at no fault of their own. Every day my dedicated team of specialist services and volunteers assist someone out of that terrible circumstance, or better help prevent homelessness through emergency assistance, but we need the support of the community more than ever to meet the growing demand”, said Lucy.

This year Vinnies CEO sleepout will be a hybrid in-person and online event on 22 June. Over a hundred participants will sleep outdoors at the National Museum of Australia. Also, leaders from the Canberra Goulburn Archdiocese will join via live stream by sleeping in their cars, backyards, or couches. All these options reflect the reality of people experiencing homelessness in Australia.
“You don’t have to be a CEO to participate in this event. We are encouraging small business owners, business and community leaders with the heart to make a difference to join the Sleepout and leverage their network to raise funds to support the less fortunate in our community.”, said Lucy.
