In a letter to the Hon Ken Wyatt AM MP, Minister for Indigenous Australians, the St Vincent de Paul Society National Council of Australia expresses support for the Indigenous voice co-design interim report.
Although not a First Nations organisation, the Society has a longstanding commitment to advocating for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The Society provides various forms of assistance to Australia’s First Nations peoples, including emergency relief in the form of assistance with food, transport, accommodation, medical, telecommunications and utility costs.
The Society stresses the importance of aligning legislative reform with constitutional recognition, noting that its position aligns with the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic Council.
The Society supports the Uluru Statement from the Heart and calls on the Australian Government to honour its election commitment to hold a referendum.
