This submission notes that more progress could be made if policy and funding approaches considered the youth justice system in context with welfare, housing, child protection, education and training, employment and health systems. The Society calls on the Committee to implement the National Children’s Commissioner’s recommendations in the Help Way Earlier report. The Society also supports two related campaigns – the Justice Reform Initiative (Jailing is Failing) and the End Child Poverty campaigns. The Society calls for a National Taskforce for Child Justice Reform, a Cabinet Minister for Children and a Ministerial Council for Child Wellbeing.
