Statement - Permanent residency for Nadesalingam family

The St Vincent de Paul Society welcomes the decision by Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, the Hon Andrew Giles MP, to grant the Nadesalingam family permanent residency in Australia.

This is a compassionate decision that puts an end to years of mistreatment and politicisation of the Nadesalingam family.

But the decision also highlights the desperate plight of thousands of others trapped in uncertainty on Temporary Protection Visas and Safe Haven Enterprise Visas and the more than 200 people still held in PNG and Nauru.

We call on the Albanese Government to quickly evacuate those held in PNG and Nauru, and to grant permanent protection to refugees on TPV and SHEVs as soon as possible so they too can create a new home in Australia.
