There are 1 in 17 Territorians who are experiencing homelessness every night- from living in cars, the long grass, to squatting, to couch surfing, to hostels and overcrowded houses. People who wake every morning thinking where they will sleep, shower, wash their clothes or get their next meal.
We offer services at Ozanam House Day Centre for the homeless in Stuart Park. All visitors are welcome to tea and coffee, with breakfast and lunch prepared by volunteers and staff on site. There are toilets and showers with fresh towels, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste and shavers. They can drop off their laundry to be washed and dried. We liaise with other community support providers like health clinics, legal services and activities programs to foster a community service hub for people in need.
Our trained volunteers operate Emergency Relief Services weekly out of Ozanam House, Palmerston Retail Store and Alice Springs Retail Store providing food, utilities support and material aid to people in financial hardship. This service offers a hand up when times are tough and gives individuals and families an opportunity to get back on their feet.
Our Community Housing Team responds to the demand for affordable housing. Vinnies case workers support people to transition from homelessness to Vinnies hostels or units, then into longer term options. Vacancies created by residents moving on to other housing options are quickly replace. Case workers maintain a waitlist of companions seeking accommodation.
The CHSP Program Garden Maintenance Team has established a wonderful rapport with our clients. Our
aged care services are for some elderly Territorians. At times, our team are the only contact clients have with the outside world. Our friendly service team offers security, safety and connection.
““Knowledge of the poor and needy is not gained by pouring over books or in discussions with politicians, but by visiting the slums where they live, sitting by the bedside of the dying, feeling the cold they feel and learning from their lips the causes of their woes.””
