Social Housing

Social Housing is rental housing that is owned or managed by the State Government, Aboriginal Housing Office, or a Community Housing Provider (CHP). It is designed for people on very low to moderate incomes who may be experiencing rental stress in the private market.

Who is eligible for Social Housing?

To be eligible for social housing, clients must:

  • establish their identity, and
  • be resident in New South Wales (NSW), and
  • be a citizen or have permanent residency in Australia, and
  • have a household income within the income eligibility limits, and
  • not own any assets or property which could reasonably be expected to resolve their housing need, and
  • be able to sustain a successful tenancy, without support or with appropriate support in place, and
  • if applicable, make repayments of any former debts to a social housing provider, and
  • in general, be at least 18 years of age.

For more information, go to: Eligibility for Social Housing Policy | Family & Community Services (nsw.gov.au) or refer to the Community Housing Eligibility Policy.

You can register your interest in public and community housing if you:

  • live in South Australia
  • don’t own or partly own residential property
  • have an independent income.

Your household’s income must be less than or equal to the income and asset limits, unless you have special circumstances.

For more information, go to: www.SA.gov.au | Who Can Register or refer to the SA Community Housing Eligibility Policy.

An applicant must meet the eligibility criteria applying at the time of lodgement of an application for registration on the Applicants List; while he/she remains on the list; and at the time of offer of accommodation. Eligibility criteria applying to all applications for assistance relate to:

  • citizenship or permanent residency
  • ACT residency
  • minimum age
  • maximum income
  • realisable assets
  • ownership of or interest in real estate.

In addition, eligibility is periodically reviewed while the applicant remains on the Applicant List:

  • when there are changes to the application (eg. household members are added or removed, or income varies);
  • prior to making an offer of housing.

For more information, go to: Eligibility for Social Housing Assistance Policy - Housing (act.gov.au) or Check Your Eligibility with the ACT Government.
