Expressions of interest open for former YMCA

The St Vincent de Paul Society (Vinnies) is seeking expressions of interest from community and recreational groups to utilise the former Kings Meadows YMCA facility, located on Blaydon Street.

Following the closure of the YMCA in 2022, the City of Launceston has been collaborating with Vinnies to ensure the site will be used as a community-focused hub.

Vinnies and the City of Launceston are now calling on community groups that wish to use the space to send in expressions of interest.

“Our intent is to turn it back into a community and recreational hub, with multiple community groups with diverse interests using the facility and making it is a true place of community connection,” St Vincent de Paul Society State President Corey McGrath said.

“Sporting activities are absolutely welcome, but we are also looking for community groups such as arts and crafts, seniors’ groups, and early childhood groups.

“We encourage any community group to put forward an expression of interest and become part of this great hub, bringing life back into such a valuable asset in the southern suburbs of Launceston.”

To assist and guide the ongoing usage of the facility, a strategic Community Advisory Committee has been put in place.

“The Committee will be providing community-led advice on what will be going on in the site, including what activities will happen,” Deputy Chair of the Committee, Dan Ryan, said.

“This site was well-utilised previously and was missed by the community once it shut down. Our intention is that all members of the community are brought together to enjoy it.”

Vinnies are eager to have community groups using the broad range of spaces available. These include two basketball courts, and an array of flexible areas including a large hall, a meeting room and a gym room that is suitable for many activities, including yoga and Pilates.

"The former YMCA is an ideal location to connect with community groups offering a range of activities,” Mr McGrath said.

"We know that the community is eager to become closely engaged with the site in Blaydon St, Kings Meadows, once again, and this is an opportunity for community groups to show their intention and get involved.”
