Holiday Season is All About Community

The Waratah-Wynyard Community Christmas Collection kicks off today with the first donation—a generous 15 kilograms of Lion’s Club holiday cakes—now under the tree at the Wonders of Wynyard Exhibition and Information Centre drop-off point.

Waratah-Wynyard Mayor Mary Duniam marked the launch of this year’s Community Holiday Collection, stressing the importance of helping families in need during the holiday season.

“Our community is known for its generosity, and the holiday season is a time when we can all come together to support those doing it tough. Whether it's non-perishable food, gift vouchers, back-to-school supplies, or even a new toy, every donation makes a difference. Let’s ensure every family in our community can enjoy the holiday season,” said Mayor Duniam.

She also encouraged donations to remain unwrapped to allow the best match to families in need. “Cash donations can also be made over the counter at the Wonders of Wynyard Exhibition Centre,” Mayor Duniam added.

Chantelle French, Youth & Community Manager Northwest for the St Vincent de Paul Society Tasmania, expressed the rising need for support.

“We’re experiencing the highest demand we've ever seen, with a 15% increase in access to services across the state. Many people are reaching out for help who have never needed support before. We expect to provide over 100 hampers in the Waratah-Wynyard area this holiday season,” said Ms French.

Mayor Duniam acknowledged the growing demand but also highlighted the unwavering support from the community.

“Despite the challenges many families face, it’s heartening to see how much our community cares. This initiative has been running for over a decade, with support from local organisations like The Lions Club, Rotary Club, St Vincent de Paul and Coast FM,” she said.

Donations can be delivered to the Wonders of Wynyard Exhibition and Information Centre until December 11, when Vincent Industries will prepare hampers for distribution to local families in need during the holiday season.
