The St Vincent de Paul Society’s (Vinnie’s) Marillac House in Hobart is helping regional Tasmanians stay in an ideal central location while a loved one receives treatment at the Royal Hobart Hospital and other Hobart-based medical facilities.
Now operating in both Hobart and Launceston, Marillac House is a place for people and their families to stay at an affordable price while accessing medical support. The comfortable accommodation provides access to a range of amenities and, in Hobart, our new space offers free laundry facilities, a large kitchen, a shared dining room, bathrooms and comfortable living spaces.
Ronald Lowry is from Miandetta and he says staying at Marillac House has made it much easier for him to feel supported and comfortable while his wife undergoes treatment at the hospital.
“If we were staying in a motel or something, we would really struggle financially, so staying at Marillac House is really tremendous,” he said.
“We can bring family members to stay too, which is great because we can all be in the same place. That really helps you survive the situation because you have family members and friends around.”
While Marillac House has been operating from 32 Brisbane Street in Launceston for almost two decades, the new Marillac House in Hobart is located on the corner of Murray Street and Bathurst Street. This places affordable accommodation for those travelling for medical purposes right in the centre of the Hobart CBD, only a five-minute walk away from the Royal Hobart Hospital and a range of other medical services.
“People love the location,” Manager of Marillac House Hobart Sarah Thomas said.
“There is a chemist right behind us, the hospitals and outpatient clinics are only a five-minute walk away and Woolworths is on the way, so everything is nearby.”
Residents are able to comfortably stay in their rooms or spend time in the public areas of the house where they can meet other residents.
“Everybody else that is here is in the same situation as you,” Ms Thomas said. “So, people swap stories and help people find their way around Hobart and get used to staying here.”

“I highly recommend staying here, and all my family members agree,” Mr Lowry said.
“I couldn’t speak highly enough about it.”
