The City of Launceston and St Vincent de Paul Society have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the future use of the former Kings Meadows YMCA site as a community hub.
Following the closure of the YMCA in June 2022, the Council engaged with 11 community organisations to gauge their interest in operating from the site in future as a community focused facility.
The St Vincent de Paul Society has been temporarily offering some initial services from the site since the YMCA closed.
While the City of Launceston has ensured provision of access to the building's sports facilities for a range of user groups, the St Vincent de Paul Society has also been providing showers and laundry services for people experiencing homelessness each weekday morning.
The MoU would see this model expanded into the future, with a formal lease to be considered by Councillors at a future Council meeting.
City of Launceston Acting Mayor Hugh McKenzie said he was pleased the St Vincent de Paul Society was eager to transition the site into a thriving community hub.
"The St Vincent de Paul Society is well recognised in Tasmania, throughout Australia and across the world for its dedication to making a positive difference in local communities," Acting Mayor McKenzie said.
"I'm pleased to see the next chapter taking shape for the future operation of this important community facility."
St Vincent de Paul Society Chief Executive Heather Kent spoke of next steps with excitement.
"We know that the community is eager to become closely engaged with the site in Blaydon St, Kings Meadows, once again," she said.
"It’s an ideal location to connect with community groups from all ages in offering a range of activities.
"Vinnies will be eager to work with other community organisations from across the region to enable the City of Launceston’s vision to maximise this site come to life once more."
